BankCard International Group
Surcharging & cash discounting

Pass the cost of credit. Keep the price you posted.

A credit price and a cash price, both posted before anyone pays.

Here is the part the category leaves off. Card network rules allow a surcharge on credit only, never on debit or prepaid, and cap it at what acceptance actually costs you. Your debit volume still costs money to accept. Anyone quoting you zero on every card is quoting a rule that does not exist.

Named Top Payments Company by the PBC Conference, 2024 and 2025

What the program covers

Credit sales — the surcharge runs at the terminal.

Applied at checkout, capped at your cost of acceptance, disclosed on the screen and on the receipt.

Debit and prepaid — no surcharge permitted.

You still pay to accept these. We price that volume separately and show you the split before you sign.

Surcharging and cash discounting are two different programs with two different rule sets. Which one you run depends on your state. See both →

What credit acceptance costs you

Start with the real number.

Enter your monthly credit volume and your effective rate — total fees divided by volume, off the summary page of your statement, not the rate on the proposal.

what a surcharge is sized to offset

Credit volume only. Debit and prepaid sales cannot carry a surcharge, so they are not in this number and a surcharge program will not offset them.

Get this number checked

This multiplies the rate you selected by the volume you entered. It is arithmetic, not a quote. What a program actually offsets depends on your split between credit and debit, which we read off your statement.

Send your last three statements.

You get a real rate back in 48 hours, in writing, with the reason behind it. Keep the marked-up statements whether you move your processing or not.

Why operators move their processing

The quote and the statement stopped matching.

A rate gets quoted. Then the assessments land, and the monthly minimum, and the PCI line, and the batch fees. Nothing on the statement is technically a surprise, because all of it was in the agreement. It just was not in the conversation. Our terms go to you in writing before you sign, and if anything moves upstream you hear it from us first, never from your statement.

Your effective rate is total fees divided by total volume — the number on the summary page, not the one on the proposal. Send a statement and we'll mark yours up.

The BIG difference

You will not outgrow the account.

However you take a payment, it runs on this account. Add a channel, add an entity, add a country — same underwriting, same ledger, same desk.

Our promise

We don't pull the rug. Rates get quoted low and drift high, accounts get opened fast and frozen faster. The industry earned that reputation. It is why our terms go to you in writing.

Talk to underwriting
Why this sits under the business

Nobody opened a business to spend a Tuesday auditing a merchant statement.

The processor points at the gateway. The gateway points at the bank. Your POS vendor has never spoken to either one, and every month you reconcile statements that do not agree. We own the underwriting, the platform, the bank relationships, and the desk that answers when you call. Same team, same ledger, whether the question is a batch that did not settle or a new entity that needs an account.

Quiet underneath. Predictable on top.

Every way you take money

One account, every way they pay.

Six channels, one merchant account, one reconciliation. The pricing program runs the same way in each of them, so a customer who buys from you twice sees the same story twice.

How it actually works

Two programs. Different rules. Your state picks.

The category sells both of these under one word and hopes you do not read the difference. The difference is the part that gets a merchant fined, so here it is.

  • Surcharging applies to credit. Only credit.

Never debit, never prepaid, and capped at what acceptance costs you. Those are network rules, not our policy, and a program that ignores them is the one that gets fined.

  • Cash discounting posts one price and takes money off.

A different compliance posture, and the right answer in states where surcharging is restricted. Signage and receipt language come with it.

  • The terminal enforces it, not your staff.

Surcharge logic and cash discount programs arrive pre-loaded on every terminal we ship. Card-type detection happens at the read, so a debit card cannot be surcharged by accident.

  • Your rep names which program you are on.

Before you sign, in writing, with the reason. If your state rules one of them out, you hear that from us rather than discovering it in a chargeback.

Ask which one fits your state

Set your own numbers

Your surcharge rate3.00%

Set at your cost of acceptance. Network rules cap it there, and underwriting confirms your ceiling before the terminal is programmed.

You keep$100.00

Customer paid cash. The posted cash price is yours in full.

If they had paid by debit, there would be no third row. Debit cannot carry a surcharge, so that sale costs you what it costs you today.

Works with your stack

Keep the tools you already run.

Open gateways, not a proprietary one you cannot leave. Type what you run. If it is not listed, type it anyway and we will tell you straight whether it connects.

Every rail, one account

What runs underneath

Money moves more than one way. All of them settle here.

A pricing program only touches the card line. The rest of what you take in still has to settle, reconcile, and land somewhere. Card, ACH, stablecoin, and treasury run on one platform here, underwritten and supported by the same team that opened your account.

Three of them. There are more.

You do not have to take all of it. Most merchants start on cards and add a rail when a real reason shows up, which is the order we recommend.

Card, ACH, eCheck

Traditional payments

Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover, plus ACH and eCheck with Plaid bank verification. Settlement on a published schedule you can plan against.

The statement teardown

Send your last three statements. We mark them up line by line — the assessments, the padding, the monthly minimum, the PCI charge — and hand back your real effective rate in 48 hours, in writing, with the reason behind it. You keep the marked-up copies either way.

Hardware & gateways

Terminals arrive programmed, not in a box with a manual.

Surcharge logic, cash discount programs, tip prompts, and receipt branding are loaded before the terminal leaves us. There is no after-install configuration step, which is the step that usually goes wrong.

Gateways

Verifone

Countertop workhorses for high-volume lanes. Surcharge logic, tip prompts, and receipt branding pre-loaded before it ships.

Wireless handheld payment terminal

Dejavoo

Countertop and wireless. A common pick when the account runs a surcharge or cash discount program, because the card-type detection is dependable.

Mobile card reader being used in the field

PAX

Countertop and mobile readers for businesses that take payment away from a fixed counter. Same program, same receipts, off the truck.

Why BIG

An old-fashioned way to treat people. A current way to move money.

How we deal with you

  • You get a named rep, not a ticket queue.
  • Terms go to you in writing before you sign.
  • If pricing moves upstream, you hear it from us.
  • The person who sold it supports it.

What runs underneath

  • Card numbers are tokenized. PANs stay off your stack.
  • Encrypted in flight, quarterly network scans.
  • Pre-dispute chargeback alerts before it counts against you.
  • Card, ACH, stablecoin, and treasury on one ledger.
Eighteen years in payments. Everything we run today is what we wished existed in 2008.
Industries

Built for the person who has to run it on Monday.

A pricing program changes what your staff says at the counter, so the category you are in decides whether it lands. Below is where we have run this before, and each one gets a rep who has seen it work and seen it fail.

Retail

Counters, carts, and curbside. Fast lines and regulars who come back.

Restaurants

Tableside, takeout, tips, and tabs that close clean at the end of the night.

B2B

Invoicing, Level 2/3 data, ACH, and the savings that show up on large tickets.

Memberships

Gyms, clubs, and studios. Recurring billing that holds onto the member.

Subscriptions

Retries, dunning, and recovery on the payments that quietly fail.

Marketplaces

Split payments at authorization, not in a month-end spreadsheet.

Professional services

Retainers, milestones, and invoices that get paid without a chase.

Multi-location

One account, many counters, and reporting a district manager can read.

Service industries & the trades

Plumbers, HVAC, electricians, roofers, landscapers, painters, pest control, locksmiths, movers, cleaning companies, pool service, and general contractors. The estimate is written before the card comes out, which is the one case where a posted credit price is easy — the customer already knew the number when they said yes.

Underwriting & risk

A person reads the file, then tells you what they found.

Underwritten by people, not by a form

48hr

Average approval, across more than twenty bank partnerships

It is the same window we use for a statement review. Send three, get a rate back in writing inside two days.

A decline is an answer, not a form letter.

We work more than twenty bank relationships, so one bank's appetite is not the end of the conversation. When a file does not clear, you get the reason and what would have to change. That is a low bar, which is exactly the problem with this industry.

We will not promise you cannot be shut down. Nobody can promise that, and the processors who say it are the ones people end up leaving. What we will do is tell you first, in writing, if anything moves upstream.

What runs on the account by default

  • Pre-dispute alerts, so you can resolve it before it counts against you
  • Representment packages built from the transaction record
  • Ratio monitoring against network thresholds
  • Tokenized card data — PANs never touch your stack

Before you book the call

Four businesses we would tell to skip this.

A pricing program is a change your customers can see. It is worth real money on the right counter and it is a headache on the wrong one. If you are one of these, we would rather you knew before the call than after the install.

Your average ticket is a few dollars.

The surcharge is pennies and the conversation at the counter costs you more than the fee does. Stay on flat-rate pricing.

You sell mostly on debit.

Debit cannot carry a surcharge. If that is most of your volume, a pricing program moves almost nothing, and we will say so on the call.

You compete on the posted price.

If a shopper is holding your shelf price against a marketplace listing, a second price at checkout is a cost you do not want. Take the interchange hit instead.

Your state restricts surcharging and cash discounting will not fit your counter.

Some operations cannot run the cash-discount version cleanly. Better to find that out in a phone call than in a rule change.

Everyone else: the statement review is free either way. It costs us more to board you and lose you than to say no on a phone call.

Sometimes the answer is no program at all

Common questions

The questions worth asking us first.

Starting with the one the category does not answer honestly.

Is this actually zero-fee?

No, and neither is anyone else's. A surcharge offsets the cost of accepting credit. Debit and prepaid cards cannot carry a surcharge under network rules, so that volume still costs you money, and there is a gateway and hardware line on the account either way. What you can accurately say is that on credit sales, the posted price is the price you keep. Anyone telling you zero on every card is describing a rule that does not exist.

What is the difference between surcharging and cash discounting?

A surcharge adds a fee to credit transactions — credit only, never debit or prepaid, capped at your cost of acceptance. A cash discount posts one price and takes an amount off when someone pays cash. Different mechanisms, different rules, and which one fits depends on your state and how you sell. Your rep names the one we are putting you on and explains why, in writing, before you sign.

Is it legal where I am?

Surcharging is restricted in some states and cash discounting is generally the answer in those. We will not tell you it is legal in all fifty states, because the rule set is not uniform and it moves. Tell us where you operate and we will tell you which program you can run there.

Will it cost me customers?

Both prices are visible before anyone decides, which is the part that matters. People react badly to a charge that appears at the end and very differently to a choice offered up front. We will also tell you plainly if your category is a bad fit — a low average ticket or a mostly-debit customer base makes this not worth doing, and we would rather say that on the call.

What is an effective rate and where do I find mine?

Total processing fees divided by total card volume for the month. It is on the summary page of your statement, and it is almost never the rate on the proposal you signed. Send us three statements and we will mark yours up and hand it back inside 48 hours.

Who programs the terminal?

We do, before it ships. Surcharge logic, cash discount programs, tip prompts, and receipt branding are pre-loaded on every terminal we send, and card-type detection runs at the read so a debit card cannot be surcharged by mistake. There is no after-install configuration step.

How fast does money reach my bank?

Card and ACH settle on a published schedule, and your rep gives you the actual schedule for your account rather than a best case. Stablecoin settles in seconds. All of it is in writing before you sign.

What if you decline me?

You get the reason and what would have to change. We work more than twenty bank relationships, so one bank passing is not the end of it. We will not promise you cannot be shut down later — nobody can — but if anything moves upstream you hear it from us first rather than from your statement.

Send three statements. Get a real rate back in 48 hours.

We mark them up line by line, work out your real effective rate, and show you what a surcharge or cash discount program would and would not offset — with your credit and debit split separated out, because that is the number that decides whether this is worth doing.
